One of the most successful hunters in the animal kingdom, this heron species can sit still for hours waiting for a meal to come close before it uses a lightening fast strike to capture food. This blue heron was hunting the coastline of St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge in the pinkest of sunsets and had a great deal of success. This bird caught several flounder, a few minnows and a crab while I watched it hang out in the surf. Herons are threatened by habitat loss and pollution.
