Bighorn Sheep

Bighorn sheep obviously get their name from the massive spiraling horns on their head used primarily by males to battle one another for the right to mate. These horns can weigh up to 30 pounds and make up at least 20% of the animals bodyweight. One of the craziest things about bighorn sheep is their eyes. They have horizontal pupils and eyes located on the sides of their heads to give them a panoramic view of their environment. If a predator were to appear on the horizon, there is a good chance this bighorn will see it. The only thing preventing him from getting a wider field of view, are those massive horns on his head.

Bighorn sheep are threatened by habitat loss, diseases from domestic animals and loss of grazing habitat due to domestic cattle herds. The National Bighorn Sheep Center helps to protect these iconic animals.
